Writing
At All Saints’, we are passionate about developing confident, capable and enthusiastic writers. Our approach to writing is carefully structured to ensure progression, consistency and creativity across all year groups. We aim to provide children with the tools they need to communicate effectively through written language, while also instilling a love of writing that lasts a lifetime.
Early Writing (EYFS and Key Stage 1)
In Early Years and Key Stage 1, writing is closely linked to our phonics programme, Read Write Inc., developed by Ruth Miskin. The programme ensures that children develop strong foundational skills in spelling, sentence construction and composition. Writing is taught alongside phonics, allowing children to apply their learning in context from the earliest stages.
For children requiring additional support, Read Write Inc. writing materials are also used as part of targeted writing interventions throughout Key Stage 1.
As children become secure in phonics, we transition to using Pathways to Write in Year 1 and Year 2. This high-quality writing programme aligns with the National Curriculum and supports children in mastering key writing skills through the exploration of engaging texts and structured writing outcomes. The units are carefully adapted to meet the needs of our learners and provide opportunities for vocabulary development, grammar instruction and extended writing.
Key Stage 2
In Key Stage 2, writing is taught through the Pathways to Write scheme, which provides a sequenced, mastery approach to the teaching of writing. Units are built around high-quality and diverse texts that inspire creativity and encourage deeper thinking. Children are supported to build upon their prior knowledge, develop increasingly complex writing skills and refine their authorial voice.
Writing units focus on a clear progression of skills, including vocabulary development, sentence structure, grammar, planning, drafting, editing and publishing. Children have regular opportunities to apply these skills across a variety of writing genres and for a range of purposes and audiences.
Our whole-school writing curriculum is underpinned by the belief that all children are writers. We aim to ensure that:
• Children are confident in expressing their ideas clearly and creatively.
• Grammar, punctuation and spelling are taught in context and embedded in written work.
• Children write for real and meaningful purposes.
• Opportunities for extended writing are planned regularly across the curriculum.
• Writing is celebrated and shared, encouraging pride and ownership in their work.
Through our personalised, high-quality writing curriculum, our children leave All Saints’ as capable, confident writers who are prepared for the next stage of their education.
