Reading
At All Saints’, we are passionate about ensuring every child develops into a confident, fluent reader with a genuine love of reading. Our reading curriculum is carefully structured to support all learners, from our youngest children in Early Years through to Year 6.
We use the Read Write Inc. Phonics programme, developed by Ruth Miskin, to teach early reading in EYFS and Year 1 and to continue supporting those in Year 2 who are still mastering phonics. The programme provides a systematic approach to teaching phonics, combining decoding skills with reading fluency and comprehension.
Children access daily phonics and reading sessions, where they read books closely matched to their phonics knowledge. The structure and consistency of the programme ensure rapid progress and reading success for all learners.
Key Stage 1 – Developing Fluency and Comprehension
Once children are confident with phonics, we build on this foundation using Read Write Inc. Comprehension and then move on to Pathways to Read. This ensures children continue to develop fluency, vocabulary and deeper comprehension skills while being exposed to high-quality, engaging texts.
Key Stage 2 – Reading for Meaning and Pleasure
In Key Stage 2, we follow the Pathways to Read programme, carefully personalised to reflect the needs of our learners. Through the use of diverse and inclusive texts, we aim to develop both reading proficiency and empathy. Children explore a broad range of genres and authors, helping them make connections with the world around them and fostering a lifelong love of reading.
