Maths 

Summer 2-

WWW

  • Children across the year groups reported that they have enjoyed their learning this year. Year 4 enjoyed learning about decimals, year 3 learning about fractions and year 2 multiplying and addition. 
  • Year 1 pupils could: represent a half and a quarter, show a basic understanding of the 4 calculation signs
  • Year 2 pupils could: show an understanding of the four operations, link fractions to division and finding equal parts
  • Year 3 pupils could: recall the column written methods for addition and subtraction, recall something they had learnt about adding fractions
  • Year 4 pupils could: illustrate an understanding of perimeter, illustrate different angles and name some of these, recall some addition of fractions, show an understanding of the value of digits in a 4 digit number
  • Year 5 pupils could: illustrate some knowledge of decimals, including addition of decimals in some cases, show an understanding of the value of digits in a 5 digit number,  carry out formal written methods for the 4 operations, show an awareness of percentages

EBI

  • Children asked for more maths learning to take place outdoors.
  • Children enjoyed the escape rooms and would like more chance to enjoy these.

Summer 1-

WWW

  • Year 2 have enjoyed learning about fractions
  • Year 5 could talk about reading and drawing line graphs 
  • Year 5 are enjoying being challenged with a range of reasoning questions within lessons
  • Year 4 have enjoyed using their laptops to support their times tables work and have been focusing on the 12 times tables
  • Year 6 shared what they know about annotating and how this helps them answer a range of questions in maths.

EBI

  • Equipment was used more frequently in lessons
  • There were more practical opportunities to support learning, i.e. weighing objects in year 3
  • More partner/group work opportunities, like in other areas of the curriculum

 

Spring-

KS1- More than 80% of pupils enjoy their maths lessons, are proud of the maths work they produce and say that their teacher(s) explain things clearly in lessons. All pupils want to do well in maths lessons. 

KS2- All pupils reported enjoying maths lessons. 75% agree that they use their maths knowledge outside of school and agree that their teacher(s) explain things clearly in lessons.

  • There was an opportunity to move around to complete a range of activities within a lesson
  • There was more opportunity for maths to be outdoors 

KS2

  • There were more online competitions
  • More group projects (year 6)
  • Some children felt that maths lessons can feel a bit rushed
  • There were lots of requests for longer maths lessons! 
  • We spoke about the importance of having a wide ranging curriculum in school and all children agreed they would not want to lose any other part of their timetable. I suggested a Saturday school for additional maths but children were less keen on this.

 

Autumn 2-

KS1

  • Good number formation – all children formed all digits correctly.
  • All children could confidently use an abacus or rekenrek to show number bonds to 10 (y1) or 20 (y2).
  • Year 2 had some helpful strategies for counting in 3s.

KS2

  • Year 3 pupils reported work on division and multiplication was harder, but not too hard.
  • Year 4 pupils said that they were enjoying their number sense sessions with lots of children in class getting higher marks.
  • Year 5 pupils reported that they had been taught some useful calculation methods, like noughts and crosses.
  • Year 6 said that they had enjoyed learning how to solve long division calculations. 

EBI

  • Year 6 pupils recalled being able to choose the focus of their retrieval task in a recent lesson and asked if this could happen more often.
  • Pupils asked whether maths could be more active, or outdoors, involving more games like in science lessons.
  • Year 3 asked about having more of a times tables focus in their lessons (this will be coming in spring term with the start of the number sense programme)
  • Year 3 also asked for some more work on time.
  • Pupils asked for more lessons on things they struggle with.

 

Autumn 1-

  • Pupils shared what they had learnt about within the first few weeks in their new classes.
  • Year 4 and year 5 pupils could share that they had learnt about rounding and the importance of the digit 5 to know when to round up or down.
  • Year 3 pupils could talk about exchanging and were learning about when this would be useful. 
  • Pupils could tell me that retrieval was used to recap something that had already been taught or can help to remember something. 
  • Year 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed the recent inter house maths competition. 
  • Year 3 and year 4 pupils agreed that they found the maths competition difficult and would enjoy it more if they had some more help to answer the problems. 
  • All pupils were familiar with using two tone counters in maths lessons and all agreed that maths equipment can help them understand their maths and would like to use it more often.
