French

Summer 2-

WWW:

  • Pupils across all year groups have expressed that they thoroughly enjoy their French lessons.
  • Year 6 particularly enjoyed playing bingo and tasting French food, which added a cultural dimension to their learning.
  • Year 5 responded enthusiastically to interactive games, including Kahoot! and Around the World, which boosted engagement and participation.
  • Year 3 loved taking part in Jacques a dit (Simon Says) and Kahoot!, making learning fun and active.

 EBI:

  • A fairer system, such as using lollipop sticks, was introduced to ensure all pupils have equal opportunities to participate in using Rigolo, as some children felt the same individuals were consistently chosen.
  • All pupils had the chance to listen to the current French Number 1 hit. This could be further embedded into lessons, as they thoroughly enjoyed comparing it to their own musical preferences, enriching their cultural understanding.

Summer 1-

WWW:

  • All children commented that they love their French lesson and they now say, 'I can speak French!'
  • Some of the children said that they spoke French on holiday and their parents 'were well impressed'.
  • Years 5 and 6 told me how they are loving listening to the French number 1 and how sometimes 'it's like the music we listen to but most of the time it's really different and they sing so fast!'
  • They were really excited that they had used Kahoot and were happy because they can see that their meetings with me have made an impact on what we're doing in school.

EBI:

  • Children said that they feel like they never get a turn on Rigolo and sometimes the teacher says 'you can have a go next week' but then they forget. They felt that this could be resolved by teachers using the randomiser on Dojo or lollipop sticks as they feel this is a fair way of choosing who goes next.
  • They said that their lessons don't always start with a retrieval, please can you ensure this is happening because it's a really good opportunity to have them practise vocab which they haven't used since last term etc.
  • The French number 1 is shared in all classes, it's a great opportunity for them to compare and contrast to the UK and also a music cross-curricular link.
  • Children feel like there is ages between French lessons and they forget things. It would be great if a mini retrieval could be done during the week - they thought maybe as handwriting practise!

Spring-

WWW:

  • Children were able to confidently compare France to the UK. They said that they knew that they don’t use capital letters for months and days of the week and that the adjective is placed in a different place within a noun phrase. They also were able to locate it on a map and knew they used a different currency to us.
  • They discussed how people in France have different traditions to the UK at Christmas and Easter and that they loved the lessons where they learnt about these traditions.
  • All classes are using Rigolo to teach and the children love this time.
  • They were able to share what they knew about the French people they have learnt about this half term. The boys especially loved learning about French footballers!
  • I asked them why we are learning to speak French and they said, ‘its so cool that we can speak to other French people when we go on holiday’ and ‘it will be easier when we go to high school and have French lessons there’.
  • They love playing games in their lessons such as bingo, around the world and matching pairs. They see their French lessons as fun.
  • All children were able to share what they have been learning this half-term.

EBI:

  • One class mentioned that they were using Kahoot in their French lessons and the other children were really excited about the prospect of this – is this something you could try to include?
  • Children were very interested in what music French children listen to, this website shows the current top 40 singles in France. Please will you share one ever so often with your class and discuss.
  • Children love learning French through songs so try to include these in your lessons when you can – please let me know if you need appropriate songs.
  • The boys were extremely enthusiastic when they discussed French footballers. They said they would like to know more about French football teams. They have heard of PSG and Marseille, this could be a 2 minute discussion where you share basic facts, a map of its location and images of what the area these teams are from looks like and how it compares to where we live.

Autumn-

WWW:

  • Mrs Penaluna lets us play games.
  • It's really good fun.
  • I like using Rigolo, it's funny.

EBI:

  • French is boring - we don't play many games.
  • The lessons aren't long enough - they feel rushed.
  • I want to play more games.
  • I would like to use Kahoot more.
  • We learnt about French football teams and music.
  • We read some stories in French.
  • To try French food.
