RE

RE at All Saints’ is led by Miss McLaughlin, who is also responsible for whole-school worship.

At All Saints’, our school vision and Christian values are at the heart of everything we do—including our Religious Education curriculum. We believe that RE is not just a subject we teach; it is woven into the very fabric of school life and shapes the way we live, learn and grow together allowing us to let our lights shine.

As a Church of England school, we actively promote Christian values throughout the curriculum. Our values-based approach encourages commitment, kindness and high expectations in all areas. Through RE, children are given regular opportunities to explore, reflect on and live out the values that help them grow into thoughtful, caring, and responsible individuals.

Our RE curriculum is based on the Blackburn Diocesan Board of Education’s ‘Questful RE’ syllabus. This scheme is designed to help pupils explore big questions, deepen their understanding of Christianity and other world faiths and make meaningful connections to their own lives and experiences. The curriculum encourages children to ask questions, think deeply and develop respect and empathy for others.

Collective Worship and Spiritual Life

Worship is central to daily life at All Saints’. We gather together each day for collective worship, which provides space for reflection, prayer, song and storytelling. These moments offer children time to pause, be still and develop their spirituality.

Children participate in worship in a variety of ways, including through drama, discussion, prayer and music. We regularly say the Lord’s Prayer, our school prayer, and the Grace, along with other child-led and reflective prayers. Worship often includes time for quiet contemplation, using symbols such as a candle, peaceful imagery or calming music to help children focus and feel grounded.

We nurture children’s spirituality through recognition of the ‘Wow’, ‘Ow’, and ‘Now’ moments—times of wonder, challenge and action. These moments help children reflect on life’s deeper meanings and develop their awareness of God’s presence in everyday life.

Each half term, we focus on a different Christian value, which is introduced in collective worship and reinforced through classroom life and personal interactions across school.

Our strong relationship with All Saints’ Church is central to our school’s identity. Children visit the church for worship at least twice per half term—sometimes as a whole school and sometimes as key stages or year groups. We are grateful for our close partnership with Rev’d Toby, who is also a member of our Governing Body and a valued part of our school community.

Guiding Lights – Pupil Leadership in Worship

Our Guiding Lights are a team of pupil leaders who play an active role in planning and leading collective worship. They support children in understanding each Christian value more deeply and model how to live out those values in daily school life.

The Guiding Lights also help maintain reflective areas in classrooms, run our prayer garden and support peers through encouragement, kindness, and compassion. Whether it’s offering a quiet smile, being a listening ear or helping someone through a tough moment, their role is one of servant leadership and quiet strength.

Learning About Other Faiths and Cultures

Through RE and our wider curriculum, children also learn about other world religions, helping them develop respect, empathy and understanding of others. We aim to prepare children to live in a diverse and multicultural society with compassion and curiosity. We also foster links with other schools—both locally and globally—to broaden pupils’ worldviews.

Faith in Action

As part of our Christian ethos, we reach out into the local and global community. We regularly support charities and take part in initiatives that encourage children to be generous, thoughtful and aware of the needs of others.

At All Saints’, our Christian distinctiveness shines through our RE teaching, daily worship, relationships and shared values. Our aim is for all children to leave our school with a deep sense of who they are, what they believe and how they can make a positive difference in the world by letting their light shine as God intented.
