Phonics

Mrs Mitchell is our Read Write Inc leader.

We implement Read Write Inc as our chosen systematic synthetic phonics programme at All Saints'. We can see the impact of using RWInc on outcomes for our children, in terms of reading and writing. Our staff team have benefitted from professional development, over a number of years, to ensure that Read Write Inc is taught with consistently high standards across school.

Children in reception and KS1 (and KS2 where this is an identified need) work in Read Write Inc groups every day, with groups decided upon based upon the outcomes of half termly online assessments and through discussion with group leaders. Children access phonics lessons for an hour each day, with some children receiving additional intervention to ensure all children at All Saints' make a strong start with learning to read. 'Pinny time' is a daily feature in reception and key stage 1 classes, and for children in KS2 who still benefit from the phonics approach to the teaching of reading.

Books that children bring home are matched with the reading book band that children engage with reading in school. Children will bring home 3 books each week; a copy of the text that they have developed familiarity with through reading in school-this will have been read in school three times by the time it is brought home (which means children can 'show off' their reading 'voice choice' when reading to you at home), a matched Read Write Inc 'book bag book' and an additional fully phonically decodable book at the same reading stage as the other texts they are exploring.

Each half term, Sway newsletters are shared with parents/carers containing QR codes/links to resources to use at home, that align with what is being taught in school, so that we can work together to give children the best start possible on their journey to becoming a confident, fluent reader.

We run workshops for parents/carers throughout the year about Read Write Inc and how to support your child on their reading journey at home.
