Maths

Mrs Huddy is the Subject Leader for Maths and leads the development of high-quality, consistent mathematics teaching across our school.

At All Saints’, we believe that every child can be successful in mathematics. Our curriculum is carefully designed to meet the needs of all learners, while promoting a deep and secure understanding of mathematical concepts. We aim to build confident, resilient problem-solvers who can apply their mathematical knowledge with accuracy and creativity in a range of contexts.

We follow the Power Maths scheme, a DfE-recommended programme built on the mastery approach to teaching maths. This approach encourages children to explore mathematical ideas in depth, develop strong number sense and use mathematical language confidently. Lessons are carefully structured to allow all pupils to move through learning together, with support and challenge provided where needed.

Our teaching is also guided by the NCETM’s Five Big Ideas in mastery:

Coherence – small, connected steps build secure understanding

Representation and Structure – visual tools and models help children “see” the maths

Mathematical Thinking – children are encouraged to reason, justify, and explain

Fluency – confident recall of facts and procedures

Variation – careful use of examples to deepen understanding

Maths is taught in year group classes, and we use a consistent lesson structure across the school, ensuring progression and familiarity as children move through the year groups. This consistency helps children to build on prior learning, develop secure foundations and make connections across mathematical topics.

Teachers prioritise retrieval and revisiting key knowledge, ensuring that previously taught concepts are embedded and regularly used. This helps children to retain what they’ve learned and apply it flexibly in new situations.

In the Reception, children begin to develop their understanding of number, shape, space, and measure through hands-on exploration and play-based activities. This builds early confidence and prepares children for the formal teaching of mathematics in Key Stage 1.

Our aim is for children at All Saints’ to develop not only strong mathematical skills, but also a genuine enjoyment of maths, recognising its importance in everyday life and its power in helping them to understand the world around them.
