History

History is led by Mrs Mitchell at All Saints’.

At All Saints’, we aim to inspire a passion for history by helping our children understand the richness of the past and how it shapes our present and future. We believe that history is more than a series of dates and events—it is about people, ideas, discoveries and the world around us.

We follow an enquiry-based approach to history, where children are encouraged to think critically, ask thoughtful questions and act as historians. Each topic begins with a ‘big question’ that frames their learning, prompting curiosity and independent investigation.

Our pupils develop a strong chronological understanding, explore a wide range of historical periods and events and engage with both primary and secondary sources. Through discussion, debate and investigation, they learn to interpret evidence, understand cause and effect and make connections across time.

At All Saints’, we want our children to understand that:

History is relevant and all around us.

The past helps explain the challenges and achievements of today.

Their actions, thoughts and words continue to shape the future.

As the Historical Association reminds us, “History is personal and global; it is everyday life and momentous occasions. It is not just about the past.”

Through high-quality teaching and engaging experiences, we aim to equip all our pupils with a deep understanding of historical knowledge, along with the analytical skills needed to think like historians—both in and beyond the classroom.
