English

Mrs Collins is the Subject Leader for English across the school, and Mrs Mitchell leads on Early Reading, Writing, and Phonics, serving as our Read Write Inc. Lead.

At All Saints’, our English curriculum is carefully designed to ensure every child becomes a confident reader and a skilled, creative writer. Aligned with the National Curriculum for England, our approach nurtures a love of language, develops essential communication skills, and supports all children in achieving their full potential.

Early Reading and Writing – Read Write Inc.

In Early Years and Key Stage 1, we follow the Read Write Inc. programme, developed by Ruth Miskin. This high-quality phonics programme provides a consistent and rigorous approach to the teaching of early reading and writing. Through daily lessons, children learn to decode words, read with fluency and expression and begin to compose written work with increasing accuracy and confidence. Read Write Inc. is also used as an intervention tool across the school to support children who may benefit from additional help.

Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 – Pathways to Write and Pathways to Read

As children become secure in phonics, they transition to the Pathways to Write and Pathways to Read programmes, both of which are fully aligned with the National Curriculum.

Pathways to Write supports the development of grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure and extended writing through high-quality, engaging texts. Each unit is built around a mastery approach, encouraging depth and progression in children’s writing.

Pathways to Read provides structured and systematic teaching of reading comprehension. It enables children to retrieve, infer, predict, summarise and analyse texts, while also developing reading fluency and a deeper understanding of language.

Throughout the school, our English curriculum is enriched by a diverse range of literature and carefully sequenced learning opportunities. Children are encouraged to read widely, write across a variety of genres and develop their speaking and listening skills.

By the time they leave All Saints’, our pupils are well-equipped with the literacy skills they need for the next stage of their education and a lifelong love of reading and writing.
