Science

Mrs Saporita-Clark is the subject leader for science at our school
At All Saints' we love science and see science as an important area of the curriculum. As such, time is dedicated to science each and every week. Each year we celebrate British Science Week and engage with the Great Science Share for Schools, during which our children are engaged in a range of wow! science activities, investigations across the range of enquiry types and planning and carrying out investigations, including recapping prior learning from previous years. Science Week and Great Science Share for Schools end with a whole school and community science fair for all to attend and enjoy.
Science Curriculum
Our progressive curriculum encourages our children to ask questions and find answers, engaging in explorations covering a range of scientific enquiry types, acquiring knowledge and developing skills. As children progress through our curriculum, they will develop disciplinary knowledge (scientific skills) which enable them to confidently work scientifically. Essential to this process is the development of scientific vocabulary, which impacts on outcomes for children as scientists and supports the development of reading comprehension. Children are encouraged to use appropriate vocabulary accurately, both when speaking and in their written work. As children progress through school, they will be able to recognise different types of scientific enquiry and plan when to use them to attempt to find answers to scientific questions. At every stage, children will be encouraged to communicate scientific concepts clearly and accurately, linking their understanding to the world around them.
Throughout each unit, links are made with the wider curriculum, particularly with maths, reading, writing, geography and the use of IT. Children will have opportunities to extend their writing to encompass a range of genre and read for information, for research and for pleasure. We make effective use of our extensive school grounds to support our science curriculum, including building in opportunities to master learning and revisit prior learning during weekly timetables outdoor learning slots.
Through exciting hands on/real life experiences, we build our children’s engagement with science and develop their cultural capital.
